Side Benefit

Paper Title: Graff Zivin, J, M Neidell, N Sanders, and G Singer, "When Externalities Collide: Influenza and Pollution,” American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, 15(2023): 320-351.

Cocktail Pairing: Side Benefit

Rationale: This paper uncovers a surprising interaction: flu infection exacerbates the harms of pollution, but the flu vaccine offers unexpected protection—muting pollution’s impact on respiratory health. This cocktail reflects that layered relationship. Gin provides a clean, aromatic backbone, while Suze introduces a medicinal bitterness, nodding to the immune system’s response and the latent sting of pollution. Tart cherry juice adds a streak of inflammation—visually vivid and subtly sharp—while rosemary syrup contributes a resinous depth that evokes herbal remedies. Vecchio Amaro del Capo brings mentholated warmth and bittersweet complexity, reminiscent of over-the-counter relief. Finished with a twist of lemon, the Side Benefit is a spirit-forward cocktail with crisp citrus, cooling herbs, and a layered finish that clears the air as it closes.
