Marching Orders

Cocktail Pairing: Marching Orders

This paper shows how sustained exposure to modest air pollution raises chronic disease risk among young, initially healthy Army soldiers, with the strongest effects on circulatory disease, particularly hypertension. American rye supplies a classic soldier’s drink, while Amara’s blood orange nods to those circulatory effects. The habanero-saline ice cube carries the central finding. Salt quietly signals high blood pressure, while the gradual release of habanero provides a growing, persistent sting as the ice melts, mirroring health effects that accumulate through sustained exposure. A thin cacao rim recalls Field Ration D, the U.S. Army’s chocolate emergency ration. Marching Orders is a spirit-forward riff on the Black Manhattan, with bitter orange, a restrained chocolate accent, and a finish that becomes more insistent with time.

Recipe: Marching Orders

  • 2.0oz American Rye Whiskey

  • 0.75oz Amara (Blood orange amaro)

  • 0.25oz Suze

  • 1 large Habanero-Saline Ice Cube

  • Garnish: Unsweetened Cacao Powder

  1. Lightly wet a 1-inch section of the outside rim of a rocks glass with Amara. Press into finely sifted cacao powder and tap off the excess.

  2. Combine the rye and Amara in a mixing glass with plain ice. Stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds.

  3. Place one habanero-saline cube in the prepared glass. Strain the cocktail over it and serve immediately.

Additional Instructions: Habanero-Saline Ice Cube

  1. Combine ¼ habanero, thinly sliced, ⅛ tsp fine salt, and 1 cup water in a small saucepan.

  2. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and steep for 5 minutes.

  3. Let cool, strain into a large ice cube tray, and freeze until solid.
